The Shelter Project Hounslow 2016

The road to Emmaus story (Luke 24.13-35) sets the theme for our church, and it is with this in mind that we again enter hosting a venue for TSPH. Over the winter months, each night of the week in different churches across the borough, there will be a night shelter for homeless men.

Starting in 2012 with 200 volunteers at 6 churches, last year, TSPH had 450 volunteers at 12 churches. 25 guests in total used the shelter and by the end of the season, 19 had accommodation and/or local employment – a wonderful ongoing story.

Once again St John’s church hall will be a venue, inviting up to 14 guests to stay on a Wednesday night to leave after breakfast on Thursday. We will be hosting from 6th January to 10th February 2016 inclusive (6 Wednesdays).

Volunteering is essential to the overall success of the project, do you think you could help? Jenny and I (venue coordinators here) have been volunteers for the last few years. We have found it rewarding, sharing time with an interesting mix of guests and volunteers. We would love you to be involved along with us. You don’t have to attend all 6 evenings or mornings, just what you can. We also welcome back those who have taken part in the past and would like to be involved again.

We need people to set up the hall in the evening, cooks to prepare in advance dishes for dinner, a kitchen team to serve food and tidy-up. We need volunteers to welcome and chat to our guests and a morning team to cook breakfast and to help pack away. We also need at least 2, preferably 3 or 4 to stay overnight in the hall office. To support these roles donations of warm clothes, toiletries, books and money would be gratefully received.
