“Like Angels on Fire”

Easter Monday saw the première at the Jazz Café Camden of Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir’s Oratorio “The Resurrection”. Bringing together some of the best voices in British gospel music today, this is a two‐act setting of the last chapters of the gospels of John and Luke for choir, band and soloists.

Tracey Campbell and other singers with a list of credits and plaudits too long to quote, gave a spectacular rendering of some sixteen well‐known gospel “anthems”. From the well known opening song, Where you there when they crucified my Lord, we knew a treat was in store. What may have begun as entertainment easily became worship.

This familiar story was told in an imaginative and fresh way. We began at the Easter Day evening meeting on the Emmaus Road, then to experience Mary Magdalene’s delight at seeing Jesus again, before going on to include Peter and Thomas. A song called Make me Over became a means of drawing all of us into the story.

You can hear them at 8.10 today (Sun 12th) on Radio 4 and now http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05pl1sj

Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir was founded in 2005 with Tracey as Choir Director as a church choir. They lead evening worship at Farm Street Church, Mayfair, (last Sunday) and St James’s Piccadilly (2nd Sunday.)

“Soul Sanctuary sing like angels on fire!”

“This choir are undoubtedly one of the most gifted and innovative choirs on the music scene today.”
