25th Birthday of the Tuesday club

The Tuesday Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary this week. It was started in 1990 by Jackie and Jenny and 2 helpers and it now has 8 helpers and many members.

Arriving at St John’s Centre, we all passed under an archway of flowers, to see an array of tables decorated with beautiful centrepieces and matching coloured paperware to each individual table. Six small trees adorned with lights made the room look very lovely.

A tasty tea of canapés, sandwiches and fruit tarts with cream was provided by Waitrose.    Four waiters, Tom, Dave, Jackie’s husband Dave and Lesley’s husband Billy and the lady helpers brought us our food.  Tanya O’Toole had made a beautiful and delicious “25” cake, the “2” was a chocolate cake and the “5” was vanilla.

10 members of “Bus‐pass to Broadway” performed their “Best of British” show which included many old time songs and dance routines. This was interspersed by an excellent solo trumpeter. At one point in the show, one of the lady artists sat on Tom’s lap and serenaded him with A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square. After that she got Dave up for a dance with her!

Two of the original members, Florrie Barker and Mary Brown still attend. Florrie recalls with fond memory going on many trips, from Northampton to Southend to the Cotswolds, not to mention the day trip to Bournemouth when three ladies “got lost” and were brought back to the group by the police in a Panda car.

Many thanks to Jackie, Jenny, Gerry, Lesley, Meryl, Ruth and Sue for all their hard work over the years. Anyone over 55, come along any Tuesday in term time at 1.00pm.
